  • SURVEY REPORT:

From the survey made when we bought Chamchela. I have included only the parts that relate to the description and specs of the boat. Any boat buyer is always advised to have a survey done at the time, and this survey was done 15 years ago, though her seaworthiness has been proven yet again by her voyages in 2006.

Surveyor: D.S. Oliver and Company (Pty) Ltd, Durban branch
Dated: 23 August 1990

The subject yacht, "Chamchela", is of all fibreglass construction on the Gitana 43 design. Both the hull and deck/coachroof are fully moulded and joined together. The three-blade fixed propellor is quite secure on the tailshaft which is supported by a 'P' bracket. The suspended rudder was found to be in a sound condition and moving freely.

The deck is secured by stainless steel pulpit rails around the bow and a stainless steel pushpit around the stern. They are joined by stainless steel cables on either side rove through anodised aluminium stanchions at intervals along the sides of the deck. The cables are externally covered in a plastic sheath.

The anodised aluminium mast is stepped on the keel passing through a tabernacle housing in the coachroof. The step fitting was found to be in a sound condition and the housing quite adequate. On the mast there are two yardarm spreaders in sound condition. The mast is supported by all stainless steel rigging which is tensioned by means of stainless steel bottle screws to the stainless steel chain plates. The forestay is secured to a stainless steel bow fitting. The heel fitting of the boom is apparently quite sound as is the kicking strap arrangement.

The deck and coachroof are fully covered in non-slip matting. Two hatches are located in the forepart of the deck opening into a chain and sail locker. Forward of the mast are located two skylight hatches. To protect the occupants of the cockpit there is a canvas dodger mounted on a stainless steel frame. In the cockpit well are located wooden seats and deckboards. Centrally located is a steering podium which incorporates a stainless steel steering wheel and a Plastimo magnetic compass. An electric unit has apparently been removed from the top section of this podium. On the fore end of the podium is fitted a wooden table. Engine indicators are located in the starboard side panel together with the relevant controls and a hand-operated bilge pump.

In the forward foxhole cabin there is a full bunk area with lockers underneath. In the next section aft is located, to the port side, the "heads". To the starboard side are located [hanging lockers and drawers.]

The main cabin comprises settees and bunks on either side. The port after corner of the main cabin comprises the galley area. Two freezer chambers are located in the same console. Under the sink unit we located foot operated pumps for the water supply (FW and SW) together with a hand-operated bilge pump. In this galley area is also located, on the outer bulkhead, a Regent gas water heater.

The opposite corner of the main cabin is fitted out as the navigational area with its appropriate desk and electronic equipment. [NOTE: all this equipment is so old, it now needs replacing.] In the same area is located the electric indicator guages and also conveniently the fuses for the electric system.

The transom cabin, being the main stateroom, may be entered either from the galley passage or direct through an access from the cockpit well. It comprises two single bunks which were found to be in a sound condition. The cabin is well appointed [with clothing lockers and storage under both bunks] and quite sound. It is served by its own en-suite heads.

The engine compartment is located under the cockpit well. It contains a BMW three-cylinder diesel engine. To the starboard side of the cockpit well is a small cabin comprising a double tier bunk, [locker and drawers.]
